“I do not believe that the housing market and the mortgage market will get back to where we were in the years leading up to the crisis. I also do not think we should regret that,” he said.

A leading think tank has cast doubt on the government’s plans to boost the housing market.
According to Policy Exchange, encouraging greater levels of lending will not solve the key problem of prices being too high.
“The real problem today is not the high mortgage required but the high cost of housing in the first place,” senior research fellow for housing and planning at the organisation Alex Morton suggested.
He added: “The key isn’t demand but supply. We’ve built fewer and fewer homes despite higher immigration and, much more importantly, older people are living for decades in large family homes.”

Prime minister David Cameron has hailed his government’s new housing market strategy, claiming it will boost the fortunes of first-time buyers.
As part of the new programme of reforms, a new mortgage guarantee scheme could encourage lenders to offer 95 per cent mortgages to buyers of new properties, a move Mr Cameron believes should kickstart renewed economic activity.
“When first-time buyers on a good salary cannot get a reasonable mortgage, the whole market grinds to a halt,” he said. “And that ricochets around the economy, affecting builders, retailers, plumbers – all the people that depend on a housing market that is moving.
Mr Cameron add: “If we don’t do something like this we are not going to get this vital market moving. We will restart the housing market and get Britain building again.”

The government’s strategy to boost the ailing housing market has been welcomed by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, but the professional body has warned that more detail is needed.
In a new package of reforms, the Department for Communities and Local Government is aiming to stimulate property sales and “lay the foundations for a more responsive, effective and stable housing market in the future”.
RICS spokesperson Michael Newey remarked: “Given its central role in driving economic growth, it is right that housing is now at the top of the political agenda. Better access to mortgage finance is essential to bring forward the new homes needed to help more achieve their aspiration of home ownership, particularly first-time buyers.”
He went on to state: “This is a good start from the government but more detail is needed.”
